Computer Science 275 Detailed Information

Description

Studies the development of information systems in organizations. The development life cycle of information systems is used as a framework for studying the management of systems development and the evaluation of opportunities for improving information systems within organizations.

Materials

Required : A USB flash drive (aka thumb drive) (1GB+) for labs / backup

Optional : Use of a laptop computer in class is encouraged but not required

Note to MAC users : The technical components of this class include software such as MS Office and MS Project (which are available on both PC and MAC). These products will be available in the class lab (PC) and students may have access on their own systems (PC or MAC). Products will be demonstrated and discussed in a PC environment only. In general, MAC users may expect some minor conversions but should be aware that certain options (VBA in EXCEL for example) are not available in the MAC versions of OFFICE

Marks

• Short assignments / In-class labs: 15%
  There will be several short assignments and/or in-class labs (average about 1 a week)
  Each is to be individually completed.
  Each assignment is valued at 1-2% of the term mark.

• Individual (or 'mini-group') Projects: 20%
  Individual project: build a working prototype of a video rental system using MS-ACCESS
  Individual or 'mini-group': Use project management software to plan, and develop resource requirements for a system conversion
  Note: Groups must use a wiki to trace and document all meetings AND store an update all information in a document management system

• Midterm Examination : 15% (in regular classroom)
  Tuesday 19 October, 2010

• Final Examination: 50%
