Laboratory Operations Coordinator

SALARY INFORMATION: The salary range is $34,343 to $67,724 per annum (Information Technology, Phase 1). The starting salary will be commensurate with education and experience

STATUS: 1.0 FTE; 1 Year Term, with the possibility of extension.

JOB TITLE: Laboratory Operations Coordinator

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Laboratory Operations Coordinator will provide highly responsive operational support for the Department's undergraduate and research computing laboratories.

NATURE OF WORK:

The successful candidate will report to the Computing Facilities Manager and will be responsible for providing first-level response and on-going operational support for computer laboratories in the Department.

The applicant will work with the technical support team to:

  • Maintain operational status of software, hardware and networking configurations forinstructional and research laboratories by providing rapid response to emerging operational issues
  • Undertake installation of new laboratory equipment
  • Undertake software development projects and evaluation of recommended software packages to be deployed within Department laboratories
  • Participate in the development of new computer laboratory concepts and multi-year strategic implementation plans for the laboratories
  • Other duties, as assigned

 

This position involves:

  • Ensuring that the laboratories are ready for use by students, faculty and staff at all times
  • Responding to emerging operational impediments in order to restore operational status
  • Documenting repetitive procedures as well as unusual occurrences for later diagnosis and remediation
  • Advising and supporting instructors in the use of the laboratories
  • Working in collaboration with other staff to deliver and evolve the learning environment in the laboratories.

Effective collaboration is essential to this position. This position is located within a fast-paced interruption driven environment with competing demands that require the ability to problem-solve and work under pressure.

Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Occasional travel for training or conferences will be required. This position will require intensive periods of concentration and computer related work. Occasional lifting and transport of computer equipment and projectors, and occasional presentations and demonstrations are required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Primary focus: maintaining operational status of software, hardware and networking configurations for instructional and research laboratories
    • First-level response to emerging operational problems in teaching laboratories, portable laboratory, break-out rooms, smart board room and research laboratories
    • Trouble-shoot, repair broken machines
    • Escalation to additional personnel as required
  • Additional duties:
    • Participate as a member of a team to undertake software development projects that enhance support for courses offered by the Department
    • Evaluate requested software packages to determine their suitability for use in the Department's instructional program.
  • Miscellaneous duties:
    • Process surplus assets disposal, asset tagging, as required
    • Engage in continuous service improvement while maintaining excellent service quality.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science with one to two years of experience related to the duties described is required. Alternately, other training in Computer Science or a related field, along with two to three years progressive experience may be considered equivalent.

Previous experience with standard operating system platforms including Linux, Macintosh and Windows is a critical requirement. Additional knowledge of advanced application development tools for mobile computing platforms is desirable. Previous experience in a Computer Science program at a post-secondary institution providing IT support is highly desirable.

SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of the curriculum offered by the Department of Computer Science, particularly undergraduate courses
  • Experience with and knowledge of software platforms: Linux, Mac OS, Windows
  • Experience with software development for mobile devices desirable,
  • Excellent communication skills
