IEEE Illumination

We would like to extend an invitation to you to IEEE Illumination!

IEEE Illumination is an annual student run conference focused towards Electrical/Computer Engineers and Computer Scientists.
This year the conference is on Jan. 21st/22nd, 2011 at the Sheraton Cavalier in Saskatoon.

On Friday the 21st we have industry tours and reception in the evening.

On Saturday the 22nd we have a full day conference and a baquet to wrap up the conference.

Both evenings have social events after the conference such as bowling and other activities.

The goal of the conference is help give students more information on career options and to help introduce the students with Industry and the working world. The conference speeches focuses on new and emerging technologies and what are considered 'soft-skills' that we typically don't learn in school. The keynote speaker this year is Orin Laney and he is an experienced engineer who is speaking about his life in the working world and all the problems he's faced and overcome.

To put 'soft-skills' in context, we mean:

  • Personal Finance
  • Starting a Business
  • Intellectual Property
  • Speaking and Writing
  • and more

They are just relevant skills that we often don't focus on in our studies.

We also have industry tours on Friday, Jan. 21st.
We are still working on them for this year, but in previous years we have done:

  • SaskPower Queen Elizabeth Power Station
  • Potash Corp. Cory Mine
  • Solar Powered Home
  • SED Systems
  • Vecima
  • and much more.

  • Professional Internship Program

The Department of Computer Science Professional Internship Program allows undergraduate students to obtain 12 or 16 months of practical "on-the-job" experience with a sponsoring company prior to completing the final year of their undergraduate degree program. The existence of a formally recognized internship program offers significant benefits to the students, to the industrial sponsors, to the department, and to the university as a whole. These benefits include: practical training and work experience for the students; technology transfer, productive work contribution, and prospective employee evaluation for the employer; and increased university-industry interaction for the department and the university.

We are now accepting applications from companies and students interested in partcipating in the program. Interns will be placed in May/Sept 2013.
