Indoor Positioning and Localization Research

An international research team lead by researchers from Computer Science and Geography at the University of Saskatchewan are actively recruiting 2 to 3 fulltime undergraduate research assistants (RAs). These RAs will work on three aspects of an indoor positioning system that will eventually provide seamless localization with GPS for both indoor and outdoor spaces. The indoor positioning system will rely on algorithms, models, and databases of signal/sensor systems already deployed throughout campus (primarily wifi and Bluetooth signals). Students will have the opportunity to work on one of three areas of active research:

  • Developing Bluetooth systems that can determine position within a range of 5 to 10 metres of available and stationary Bluetooth devices.
  • Develop a web-based localization system that takes an existing indoor positioning system (composed of an algorithm and database) that is already in place for large portions of campus.
  • Systematic software testing, user evaluation and calibration of the localization system employing existing and future algorithms and opportunistically available infrastructure around campus.

For additional information interested students should contact either Professor Kevin Stanley (kstanley@cs.usask.ca) or Professor Scott Bell (scott.bell@usask.ca).

  • Professional Internship Program

The Department of Computer Science Professional Internship Program allows undergraduate students to obtain 12 or 16 months of practical "on-the-job" experience with a sponsoring company prior to completing the final year of their undergraduate degree program. The existence of a formally recognized internship program offers significant benefits to the students, to the industrial sponsors, to the department, and to the university as a whole. These benefits include: practical training and work experience for the students; technology transfer, productive work contribution, and prospective employee evaluation for the employer; and increased university-industry interaction for the department and the university.

We are now accepting applications from companies and students interested in partcipating in the program. Interns will be placed in May/Sept 2013.
