Description

This will be an “unplugged” format of presentation: not too many powerpoint slides to put you
to sleep, much discussion of important issues in adopting agile and how to address them.
What Makes Agile Work?. Agile approaches to software/application development have been
around formally for 10 years now and Geoff has been involved in the agile community since the
early days. As a consultant, coach and trainer he has seen many organizations attempt to adopt
agile and sadly a surprisingly large number fall flat because they the implemented the agile
process without addressing critically important transitional issues in team culture, management
culture/motivation, governance, and technical capabilities. Geoff likes to say it like this: “You
can’t DO agile, you have to BE agile!”. Come to this event to share Geoff’s experiences with the
group on how to tackle these issues that enable a successful agile adoption.

Speaker Biography
Dr. Geoff Hewson is an industry-recognized recognized expert and SPC's Principal
Consultant on Agile methods. Geoff has consulted with, trained, and coached
numerous teams as they make the transition to agile approaches to software
development. Geoff’s passion and philosophy is based on adapting agile to fit the
specific needs and circumstances of his clients, rather than force-fitting the client’s
business operations to abstract and academic models of agile process. He co-founded
Agile Vancouver: BC’s agile practices special interest group (which runs a very active
series of monthly meetings and an annual conference every fall). Geoff is a Certified
Scrum Master (CSM) and Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO). Geoff is frequently
invited to speak on Agile best practices at industry events and conferences and last
year he is also the co-producer of the Experience Reports stage at the Agile Alliance’s
Agile 2009 conference in Chicago.

  • Professional Internship Program

The Department of Computer Science Professional Internship Program allows undergraduate students to obtain 12 or 16 months of practical "on-the-job" experience with a sponsoring company prior to completing the final year of their undergraduate degree program. The existence of a formally recognized internship program offers significant benefits to the students, to the industrial sponsors, to the department, and to the university as a whole. These benefits include: practical training and work experience for the students; technology transfer, productive work contribution, and prospective employee evaluation for the employer; and increased university-industry interaction for the department and the university.

We are now accepting applications from companies and students interested in partcipating in the program. Interns will be placed in May/Sept 2013.
