Abstract
This talk will briefly describe DB2 and its companion products to
provide an overview of the scope of the database development work at IBM.
We'll then drive deeper into the database engine and look at the complexity
of some of the large systems we work with and the problems we are
working on. We'll conclude with some very recent work we've completed
using the Virtual Interface (VI) Architecture to cluster standard high
volume Intel SMP servers into powerful MPP systems.
About the speaker...
Berni Schiefer is manager of the DB2 Universal Database performance
team within IBM. He graduated from the U. of S. with a B.Sc in Computer
Science in 1985
and joined IBM. Since then he has worked on a wide range of
database development projects, including SQL/DS and the
Starburst
experimental relational database at the IBM Almaden
Research Lab, prior
to working on DB2.
Since 1990, he has been working on introducing advanced
technology into
DB2 UDB with particular emphasis on performance,
performance tuning,
advanced SQL, and complex query optimization.
