Abstract

Cryptography is used for safeguarding information during transmission. After a short historical introduction, we will sketch the principles of private key and public key cryptography, and the mathematical background of the latter. We discuss the various purposes of encryption and the corresponding mathematical approaches. We sketch the principles of the RSA, Diffie-Hellman and ElGamal system, and some modern mathematical developments. Finally, we will summarize some of the attacks on these systems. The talk is meant as an introduction for graduate students. For the Summer of this year, we are planning a seminar on cryptography and coding theory; everybody is welcome to participate.

About the speaker

Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann studied Mathematics and Physics at the Ludwig Maximilian Universitaet Muenchen, where he got his "vordiplom" (equivalent of BSc). He did his doctoral work at the Universitaet Heidelberg, defending in 1990. Since 1997, Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann has been active at the University of Saskatchewan, where he is presently an Associate Professor with tenure. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
