Abstract
This paper examines the impact of the Internet on the public sphere
and civil society in Singapore. Influenced largely by the changes in
the nature of capital of flows, the city-state has embarked on an
ambitious program of promoting the use of the Internet. The concerted
promotion and adoption of the Internet technology has constituted the
conditions for the expansion of the public sphere and the
proliferation of civil society groups. This technology has also
facilitated linkages between global and local civil society
organizations in a manner that was not possible in the past. The
sociological implications for this specific intersection between the
Internet, society and politics are discussed.
