Virtual Reality is a label with many meanings. We present a taxonomy of virtual reality applications, briefly discuss their application areas, and identify the most commonly used tools to create Virtual Reality applications of each type.
The production pipeline used in commercial development is reviewed and some of the implications with respect to teaching the underlying principles in a University environment are presented.
We conclude with a demonstration of very rapid Virtual Reality application development using a state-of-the-art commercial development environment.
David Callele received his M.Sc. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1987. He worked in the telecommunications industry for the next decade, in 1990 founding Digital Systems Group, one of the first companies to deliver computer- telephony integration products to the consumer market. After leaving DSG and spending a few years offshore, David returned to Saskatoon and taught in the Computer Systems Technology program at SIAST - Kelsey campus for 3 years.
Currently, David is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science where he is also working on his Ph.D., with a focus on using programmable graphics cards as coprocessors for scientific computation. For the last 7 years, David has also been a consultant to individuals and organizations across North America and Europe in the area of virtual reality systems and technical communications.
