Policy-Driven Management for Distributed Applications |

Application quality of service (QoS) requirements refers to non-functional requirements such as performance, reliability, and availability. Managing quality of service according to these requirements, however, is no simple task. In addition to satisfying application QoS requirements, QoS management must also respect administrative requirements imposed by administrative. Such administrative requirements are necessary to balance user requirements against the capabilities and resources of the distributed computing environment supporting their applications, as well as the needs and broader goals of the enterprise.
Properly capturing and handing such administrative requirements is a challenging problem. In this talk, we formalise administrative requirements as administrative policies, and use policy-based management techniques for QoS management. Doing so adds a great deal of flexibility and power to QoS management. This talk will discuss our general policy-based approach to QoS management, provide several examples of administrative policies, and present highlights from the use of a prototype policy-based QoS management system that uses these policies in a variety of experiments with a distributed multimedia application.
Professor Hanan Lutfiyya is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Western Ontario. Her research interests are in distributed systems, policy-driven management, QoS management and pervasive computing.
