As computers become more prevalent in today's society, they are being used by a more diverse set of users. In this talk I will discuss how user-specific adaptation can be employed to tailor computer applications to suit a wider range of individuals, with a focus on two related projects. This first project addresses the problem of increasingly complex and feature-rich graphical user interfaces. I will present a mixed-initiative approach to reducing interface complexity, where user-controlled customization is supported through adaptive customization recommendations. The second project involves supporting student exploration in an intelligent learning environment.
Ms Andrea Bunt is a Ph.D. candidate in the Computer Science Department at the University of British Columbia. She received an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia in 2001 and a B.Sc. (Honours) from Queen's University 1999 majoring in Computing and Information Sciences. Andrea's research interests include user modelling, adaptive and adaptable interfaces, intelligent learning environments, reasoning under uncertainty and human-computer interaction.
