How to Configure SpamAssassin

Spamassassin is a tool for helping identify spam in incoming email. Configuring spamassassin is fairly straightforward:

  • Add the following two lines to the beginning of your $HOME/.procmailrc file:
    :0fw
    | /usr/pkg/bin/spamassassin -P
  • If you wish to stuff the spam into a separate mail folder, something like this in your .procmailrc will do the trick:
    :0:
    * ^X-Spam-Status: Yes
    mail/caughtspam
    (the above will put the spam into "mail/caughtspam" in your homedir.)

  • If you wish to stuff the spam into a separate mail MH mail folder, add a line like the following to your .maildelivery file:
    X-Spam-Flag  "YES"           | ? "/cs/lib/rcvstore +spam"

Spam email will be identified with a '*****SPAM*****' tag added to the Subject line of email that Spamassassin believes is spam.
