Elearn 101
Standards, Systems and Interoperability

August 17 and 18, 2005

We wish to announce an upcoming workshop on E-Learning technologies that will be presented by the University of Saskatchewan's Department of Computer Science and ARIES Laboratory. This workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to various technologies for developing on-line courses, working with learning objects, and developing and deploying content on various web-based learning content management systems (LCMS).

Tools such as learning object repositories, content packaging systems, and learning management systems will be demonstrated by presenters and explored in the laboratory by workshop participants.

International standards and specifications for learning object metadata, content packaging, sequencing, assessment and learning design will be introduced. These standards pave the way for a common approach to developing content that can be presented to learners by any standards-compliant system (including WebCT, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, ATutor, Moodle, or our locally developed open-source system, iHelp Courses). Real examples of this process will be followed - from best practices in content creation with XHTML, content packaging in Reload, and deployment using a variety of content management systems.

This two-day workshop is intended for instructional content developers, instructional designers, on-line course content specialists, media or information technology specialists interested in e-Learming, or managers and administrators wanting to better understand e-Learning solutions.

The workshop will be held on August 17 and 18, 2005 at the University of Saskatchewan. Registration is free for individuals employed in the University, Government, College, or K-12 systems. A limited number of seats are available, so register early.

On August 19th, the ARIES Laboratory will hold its annual research symposium and participants in the workshop wishing to stay on for the symposium are welcome to attend.

Registration information and a more detailed schedule for the workshop is available at http://www.cs.usask.ca/spec_int/workshops/elearn/
