Post-Degree Specialization Certificate in Computer Science

For students who have completed or are completing a four year University degree in some other discipline, and who wish to complete a Computer Science program, there are two options, the B.Sc. degrees (either Three-year or Four-year) or the Post-Degree Specialization Certificate. To obtain a PDSC in Computer Science a student must meet all the discipline requirements, as well as the promotion and graduation standards, for the B.Sc. Four-year Major in Computer Science (see calendar). However, you do not have to complete the other degree requirements for distribution or electives. In taking courses for the PDSC, a student must complete at least 30 credit units from the College of Arts and Science that are not used for any other degree or certificate.

This program differs from a B.Sc. in that a student need not complete requirements 1 through 5 and requirement 7 for the Bachelor of Science degree. As a result, a student will not necessarily have the breadth of background in Arts and Science that is expected for a B.Sc. However, the student has the breadth provided by their other degree, and has the complete Computer Science and Mathematics background of the Four-year Computer Science program.

Note that by taking several Computer Science courses and Mathematics courses as part of the first degree, it is possible to complete both the other degree and the PDSC in Computer Science in 5 years. In particular, this can be done for many programs in the College of Engineering and for Development of Information Systems majors in the College of Commerce. Contact the Department of Computer Science for more information. Also, students with alternative selections of mathematics, statistics and/or business science courses from their other degree are urged to consult the department and the college regarding possible equivalencies.

The PDSC is as strong a program in terms of computer science and related courses as the 4-year B.Sc. in Computer Science. Where it differs from the 4-year B.Sc. in Computer Science is that the PDSC does not necessarily require that the student meet the requirements of the College of Arts and Science, namely the requirement for a full course in each of a physical science, a language, a humanity, a social science, and another non-science. On the other hand, to obtain a PDSC, the student must have another 4-year degree. Thus the student must have met the full requirements of the other degree, which probably requires many of these courses.

Another option for students with another degree who wish to obtain a strong background in computer science is to take the 4-year B.Sc. in Computer Science. In addition to meeting the Arts and Science requirements of the above paragraph, they need to take at least 60 credit units that are only used for the second degree. For a PDSC, only 30 credit units are required that are only for the PDSC.
