The University of Saskatchewan is one of five Canadian universities selected to participate in a CANARIE project to test the deployment of the MBONE (Multicast backBONE) on the CANARIE National Test Network (NTN). The Cisco routers used in the NTN have been configured to support IP multicast, and the related DVMRP and PIM software.
To date, the MBONE tools have been used for desktop videoconferencing between researchers across the NTN ATM backbone, as well as for the delivery of IETF, conference, and seminar presentations originating from elsewhere on the MBONE. Plans are afoot at UBC to use the MBONE for distance education course delivery this fall. At the University of Saskatchewan, we have used our MBONE connectivity to do network measurement and workload characterization for MBONE traffic over ATM. This work is conducted by Carey Williamson and Tim Harrison.
Future plans are to experiment with IPv6 on the CANARIE NTN as well.
