Network Management in ATM Networks

Collaborating Investigators on this Project:

Synopsis of Project

High speed network technology is bringing about the convergence of telecommunication and data communication networks, and is fostering the growth of traffic types that have been carried by neither network type in the past. These networks will continue to expand in terms of geographical and organisational extent, speed, and complexity. Network Traffic Management is required to ensure the stability and reliability of the network, and to ensure that the QOS requirements of the different traffic types are met. This must be done in a fashion that ensures that network providers are able to manage their networks efficiently in order to maximise the return on the substantial investments that they will make in constructing these networks.

The project is currently investigating proposed strategies in both telecommunication and data communication areas, and studying SNMP-based network managers for LAN, WAN, and high speed networks, notably TRNet. Once we have succeeded in providing ourselves the ability to manage faults, performance and configuration, we will develop and test strategies for dynamic link and bandwidth management.
