Members of the "shellrippers" team celebrate their win at BSides Regina

UofS Cyber Security Team Clinches Victory

The UofS Cyber Security Team (CST) celebrated their first win at the recent BSides Regina Capture The Flag competition.

The UofS Cyber Security Team (CST) recently travelled to attend BSides Regina, a community-driven cybersecurity conference which aims to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing amongst information security enthusiasts, professionals, and students from across the province. This event features presentations, hands-on workshops, and interactive demonstrations to highlight new discoveries in the field, while also serving as an amazing opportunity to network with companies and other individuals that share the same passion for cyber security.

One key portion of the event is the Capture the Flag (CTF) tournament, where various teams of industry professionals and students work together to compete in a Jeopardy-style competition by solving challenges in areas like reverse engineering, cryptography, open source intelligence gathering, networking, and forensics.

Representing the UofS CST's "shellrippers" team were Adhyan Patel, Brendan Hay, Dakota Main, and Ryan Mathews. Over the course of five intense hours, they worked hard to tackle an increasingly difficult set of problems, keeping pace with the talented BSides Saskatoon team, and the dedicated students from the University of Regina's Cyber Security Club. In the final thirty minutes, Adhyan Patel cracked a critical challenge, giving the team just enough points to overtake the lead. This victory marked the club's first-ever 1st-place finish.

The UofS CST is now looking to the future as they gear up for the BSides Saskatoon event in August.

Anyone interested in joining the UofS CST club and joining in on their Capture the Flag adventures or general meetings, there will be meetings held every Tuesday at 6:00PM in the Spinks 320 computer lab until April 8th.
