New Faculty Welcomes: Dr. Madison Klarkowski and Dr. Cody Phillips

The Department of Computer Science welcomes two new faculty members today: Madison Klarkowski and Cody Phillips.

Dr. Madison Klarkowski

Madison received her PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. Her PhD research focused largely on the psychophysiological evaluation of the player experience, with a keen interest in assessing the role of psychophysiological measurement in player and user experience contexts. She subsequently remained with the Queensland University of Technology as a post-doctoral researcher and lecturer. She is a strong advocate of ‘games for good’; this is reflected in her membership with both the Well Played and MindMax initiatives, which seek to utilise video games for social connectedness and the promotion of wellbeing practices. Madison is also passionate about the promotion of diversity in both video game and broader IT contexts.

She will be joining the Human-Computer Interaction Lab and is especially interested in developing a research program that explores eSports, social connectedness, and user mastery in digital contexts.

Dr. Cody Phillips

Dr. Cody Phillips is an early career researcher joining the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Computer Science as a Special Lecturer. Cody completed his Ph.D. with the Games Research and Interaction Design Lab at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia.

As a lecturer, Cody seeks to leverage the motivational pull of games to enhance teaching and learning experiences. Cody’s traditional research outcomes have focused on the impact of video game rewards and the use of applied games. He led the development of non-traditional research outputs, such as game prototypes for children with cystic fibrosis, as well as VR environments for use in human-spatial navigation experiments. Cody hopes to continue applying games research to real world problems - particularly in the area of wellbeing.
